It was on August 28, 2013 that Fitz and The Tantrums performed in the 97X Green Room.  They were in town playing later that night in support of Bruno Mars at the Amelie Arena.

They performed two songs that day, “Fools Gold” and “Out of My League.”  Unfortunately, they didn’t perform “The Walker” which at the time was one of the biggest songs on 97X.   Their performance sounded great and what struck me the most about them were their professionalism.  They were very buttoned up and efficient, meaning they didn’t waste much time.  They soundchecked, performed and were out the door.  Even with [More]

Today in 97X History – August 26th

We’re going WAY back with today’s entry.

It was on August 26, 2001 that 97X hosted the “97X Summer Lovin’ Beach House Blast” at Shephard’s Beach Resort.  The headliner was The Calling, who was enjoying success with their hit “Wherever You May Go.”

Unfortunately, there’s not much in the way of photos from the event.  Back in 2001, we were using cameras that saved the photos to floppy disks…yes, you read that correctly, floppy disks!  These disks have long since been either destroyed or lost.  There are a couple images that still survive.

There’s no photos of the band performing that day, but as you can see above, there [More]

Joel played this song Friday afternoon on 97X and I gotta be honest, it’s been stuck in my head ever since.  I haven’t had an ear worm like this is a long, long time.

The band is Judah and the Lion and the song is “Take It All Back.”

What do you think of it?

Who leaked “Heathens” early?

So, rewind back to June 15th, Weezer, Panic! at the Disco and Andrew McMahon were in town and they stopped by the 97X studios to play acoustic sets for some winners.  After the festivities, our Roadrunner Records rep played a couple 97X staff members the new Twenty One Pilots song “Heathens.”  It was very top-secret, we could hear the song, but we weren’t allowed to play it on the air yet.  The plan was that it was going to be released a week later as a surprise in conjunction with the video.

Fast forward to later that night and I’m watching [More]

against me

On August 17, 2007, Laura Jane Grace and James Bowman of Against Me! performed the first of four epic 97X Green Room performances.  (Note: The date on the video shows 8/18, but that is incorrect!)

They were in town playing a show at Jannus Landing with Gaslight Anthem.   97X was playing “Thrash Unreal” at the time so we asked them to come in and perform a couple acoustic songs for winners and staff.

This 97X Green Room performance was my first taste of the power of this band live.  Laura’s voice left most of us in awe.

In subsequent years, the band has shown great love to 97X.  In addition to the [More]

DH Green Room

The Dirty Heads are a band that is synonymous with 97X.  In fact, 97X is the #5 spinner of their music in the country!

The band has a rich history with 97X, having played Next Big Thing a total of 3 times (NBT10, NBT13 and NBT14) and performed in the 97X/Rolling Rock Green Room a total of 3 times.

It’s one of those Rolling Rock Green Room appearances that happened three years ago today, June 24, 2013.  They performed a three song set including “Dance All Night”, “Lay Me Down” and the song below “Cabin By The Sea” for 97X listeners.

Having attended almost every single 97X Green Room, I [More]
