Fort De Soto Beach is covered in millions of snails

The reason they are here is still unclear but millions of Cerith snails have washed up on Fort De Soto beach. At first you may think the sand is covered by a sea of black pebbles but nope, those are snails.

The snails are not foreign to the Bay area but usually do not arrived in these numbers and would be found on the bottom of the Gulf in the sand. Theories range from low tide, to an algae bloom, to a possible side effect of all of our recent hurricanes.
