We need to talk about the MTV VMAs

We need to talk about the MTV VMAs

Can we start with the fact that it was 3 HOURS LONG and 90% commercials and TERRIBLE Katy Perry jokes? Okay, let’s take it from the top. The VMAs used to be an event we truly looked forward to watching every year. It was a place for all-star performances and real musical talent. But this year a few things REALLY started to bother me more than ever before.

Now don’t get me wrong, the night wasn’t all bad. We had some great performances and moments throughout the evening. Kendrick Lamar picked up a well-deserved 6 VMAs and dominated the night, Taylor Swift debuted a pretty awesome new video, and Jack Antonoff ate a banana! So let’s just go through a few highs and lows together.

  1. Fall Out Boy showed up with two of the Young and Menace llamas because they officially DGAF anymore.

2. Bleachers performed ‘Don’t Take The Money’ during the pre-show and got us PUMPED to see them at Jannus Sept. 16th.

3. Better than the performance though, was this moment. Jack Antonoff casually ate a banana as Katy Perry fumbled through her horrendous opening monologue.

And thanks to girlfriend Lena Dunham’s Instagram we know that wasn’t the only snack he brought. A sandwich too! #MealPlan.

Boo at VMAs with a sandwich like the prince he is

4. Paris Jackson said what all of us wanted to say. #WeMustResist.

5. In true Thirty Seconds To Mars fashion, the band performed their new single ‘Walk on Water’ in a new and CRAZY way. Body heat cameras! ~trippy~

And how about the glorious glitter cape Jared rocked? SLAAAAAAAAY.

6. Lorde performed ‘Homemade Dynamite’ and left us all like GIRL WHY AREN’T YOU SINGING? Turns out she had the flu. What a trooper!

7. Here’s where anger sets in. Jared Leto had to ask the crowd TWICE to stand for his tribute Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell. He then said some beautiful words and introduced that they were going to show the Linkin Park 2010 VMA performance. They played it for all of 15 SECONDS and then cut to commercials!!!! I was legit screaming profanity at the TV. Beyond disrespectful.

What’s worse is on the other side of commercials we got more terrible sketches and jokes from Katy Perry. SHE WAS AWFUL CUT HER NEXT TIME PLZ.

Fans noticed.

7. That wasn’t even the first time they cut someone off. Sweet little Julia Michaels was about to perform her hit ‘Issues’ (first time at VMAs) and cut to commercials 10 seconds in! Here’s the performance in full, gee thanks for putting me on Youtube MTV.

8. The BIGGEST atrocity in my opinion is that for a second year in a row they completely skipped announcing the best rock video category on television. How do you just isolate an entire genre like that? A genre with a rich history and one of the most POWERFUL fan bases! Who at MTV decided it was the least important? So pissed.
