How else would Discovery Channel kick off Shark Week than by having the greatest Olympian of all time race a deadly shark in open water?

The only problem was that the shark was computer simulated using data analysis of real sharks’ swimming metrics, and Michael Phelps raced it under very controlled conditions.

It’s safe to assume that Discovery Channel paid Phelps a boatload of money as well. He did get a chance to race actual sharks in a warmup to the race against the great white, in which Phelps beat a Reef Shark. He was blown away by the Hammerhead as you can see below.

All in all, I don’t know what to make of this. None of it. I mean, how fast is a shark? I’ve never been close enough to one to see. I’m sure that most people can say the same thing. So why this was a great marketing stunt on behalf of Discovery Channel, I’d say that’s about it. Judging by social media outcry, I wasn’t the only one disappointed to find out that he didn’t race a real Great White Shark. But, kudos to you Discovery Channel. People watched, and we’re writing about it.
