Forbes recently announced that R&B and Hip Hop accounts for 25.1% of music consumption in the US, overtaking Rock for the first time ever. Still impressive however, Rock sits at 23% of music consumption.
For those of you who think EDM is taking over, well, not quite yet. While that genre has grown from essentially nothing, it still has a long way to go. And while R&B and Hip Hop claim the top spot of most listened to, Rock fans tend to support their favorite artists in a different way, accounting for 40% of album sales nationwide. Hip Hop fans meanwhile, tend to stream their favorite artists rather than purchasing an album. That makes sense because I think vinyl collecting favors the rock/ indie scene more.
If you are a budding musician and for some odd reason are deciding between a career in Hip Hop versus Rock, I think this video will help you make that decision. The money clearly appears to favor those at the top of the Hip Hop charts.
