In case you missed it, the 2017 Brit Awards took place last night, in what is essentially the British equivalent to the Grammys. Due to the globalization of music nowadays, we see plenty of crossover musicians find success at awards ceremonies worldwide. This year was no different. Tributes to the late great David Bowie and George Michael were the centerpiece of the night. Last year’s Next Big Thing headliner, The 1975, took home an award, something they failed to do at the Grammys as well as newcomer, Rag N Bone Man.

The 1975 won the British Group award, beating out Radiohead and Bastille. They also performed their hit single “The Sound” to negative messages about themselves. For television audiences worldwide it appeared that the Brits had been hacked, because messages like “unconvincing emo lyrics” and “terrible high pitched vocals” appeared on the screen opposing Matty Healey. It turns out this was planned and is actually quite funny. I definitely have heard some haters use the same phrases, ever since “Chocolate” became popular. Watch their performance below:

Former rapper Rag N Bone Man was the biggest surprise of the night, taking home 2 awards, including the coveted Brits’s Critic Choice Award. The other award was for British Breakthrough Act. His smash hit single “Human” has been becoming more and more popular among US based alternative stations, although he’s been an underground favorite across the pond for several years. The song has already reached #1 on iTunes in 33 countries, reaching platinum in 4 of them. Perhaps just as impressive is that it peaked at #2 on the Worldwide Shazam chart.
