The 1975 released a new track, a delicate cover of Sade’s “By Your Side”, benefiting the British charity organization, War Child. War Child is an organization that offers aid and protection to children affected by war. They premiered the song on MistaJam’s BBC Radio 1 show. The slow tempo, R&B undertones, warped auto tune over Healey’s vocals, and silky synthesizers make it sound more like a Bon Iver track, further showcasing the British alt band’s ranging talent. Front man Matty Healey explains the decision to cover the track as such:
“When I was listening to it, I was listening to it with a real sense of modernity and thinking, ‘Wow this is still really, really forward thinking.’ So me and George [Daniel] couldn’t help ourselves … It’s such a beautiful song.”
The song was released 17 years ago by an artist, Sade, an early creator in the neo soul genre who continues to be inspiration for modern day artists. Some artists include, but are not limited to, Chance the Rapper, Kanye West, Beyonce and obviously now, The 1975. Beyonce was called Sade’s music a “true friend”.
