The Naked and Famous meet America. America meet The Naked and Famous.
Hailing from New Zealand, the alternative rock outfit will be spending the rest of the year touring America in support of their third studio album, Simple Forms. Relatively unknown outside of indie rock circles, The Naked and Famous made the jump to a more commercial alt rock sound in their latest release. The band is highly regarded and recognized in New Zealand, having won 9 New Zealand Music Awards and 1 NME award. If you are reading this, you probably don’t know much about the band and may not have heard of them until their most recent single, “Higher” started to hit the airwaves recently. However, you probably have heard some of their music a few years ago and may not know it.
Thom Powers and Alisa Xayalith formed the band in 2007, and the name, “The Naked and Famous”, can be traced back to The Presidents of the United States of America’ song of the same name. It is also quoted in a song by English musician, Tricky, in which “everybody wants to be naked and famous”. Isn’t that the truth?
Following some early turbulence between band members, they settled on their current lineup in 2009, and released their debut album, “Passive Me, Aggressive You” in 2010. If you are a fan of The Naked and Famous, it is probably a result of this album. Prior to their most recent album, their two most popular singles to date were “Punching in A Dream” and “Young Blood”, both from this album.
Like many foreign bands seem to do following success in America, the band moved to Los Angeles in 2012 to begin working on their second album, In Rolling Waves. This album was not met with the same critical acclaim as the first, and nonetheless the band was able to maintain moment from their prior work. Thanks to heavy touring and numerous festival appearances, The Naked and Famous have become an indie/ alt rock staple among many fans. “Punching in A Dream” and “Young Blood” are anthemic songs that can stand the test of time among alternative rock.
And now, following the release of their latest and third studio album Simple Forms, we can add the lead single “Higher” to that list. The Naked and Famous has a knack for creating songs that inspire, make you yearn, sing a long and dance for more. They have a pure, simple, synth pop sound that is unique to them. Lucky for you, they will be performing at Next Big Thing on December 3rd. Like many bands, and especially because they are based in LA/ New Zealand, they don’t get to Florida often. I can assure you they will be fun to watch and easy to enjoy.
Check out their latest single “Higher” below, and to refresh your memory “Young Blood” is below that.
