As if twenty one pilots couldn’t get any bigger right now, (they’re taking over the world btw), they seem to garner another accolade each day. When you’re a band as big as twenty one pilots, someone else covering your music isn’t necessarily such a big deal. Typically the more popular and well respected you get as musicians, the more people want to cover your music. It’s just simple logic. However, when researching the internet, it is difficult to find covers of twenty one pilots songs from noteworthy artists. I’m sure there are some out there, but, if so, they are not plastered all over YouTube or easy to find. However, you can spend the rest of your life watching Joe Shmo cover twenty one pilot’s songs from his bedroom, but who really wants to do that…?
So, when I came across this cover of “Heathens” performed by Martin Garrix and Bebe Rexha for BBC Radio 1 in England last week, I figured it was kind of a big deal. If you’re a fan of EDM and top 40 music, you should recognize these two from their worldwide hit “In the Name of Love”, which has made its way onto 33 different charts across 25 countries. Martin Garrix himself is one of the biggest DJ’s in the world, and he’s only 20 years old. The hundreds and thousands of covers of twenty one pilots circulating YouTube are all fine and good, but when artists like this perform your hit song to the world, people listen. It also adds another level of credibility when reputable artists show their respect in such a way. As if twenty one pilots needed the help taking over the world, they just got some more!
