Today in 97X History – June 24th

  • 2:09 pm Friday, June 24th, 2016 by Dan - 97X Program Director

The Dirty Heads are a band that is synonymous with 97X.  In fact, 97X is the #5 spinner of their music in the country!

The band has a rich history with 97X, having played Next Big Thing a total of 3 times (NBT10, NBT13 and NBT14) and performed in the 97X/Rolling Rock Green Room a total of 3 times.

It’s one of those Rolling Rock Green Room appearances that happened three years ago today, June 24, 2013.  They performed a three song set including “Dance All Night”, “Lay Me Down” and the song below “Cabin By The Sea” for 97X listeners.

Having attended almost every single 97X Green Room, I [More]

INTERVIEW: Adam from X Ambassadors

  • 2:44 pm Sunday, June 12th, 2016 by Joel

Flying by the seat of our pants backstage at Bonnaroo! We were about to leave and grab some lunch – I still haven’t had an amish donut during my time on the farm – when we got word that a couple of the guys from X Ambassadors would be dropping by Radio Roo in the next few minutes! Well, my amish donut fix can wait if it means I’m delivering the goods for you fine people.

X Ambassadors drummer Adam Levin sat down. He snapchatted us while we Facebook Live-d him – because these are the times we live in – then [More]

Pearl Jam outlasts a weather delay at Bonnaroo 2016 Day 3

  • 12:58 pm Sunday, June 12th, 2016 by Joel

One tiny severe weather cell just grazing The Farm’s perimeter with light rain but peppering nearby areas with lightning was enough to shut down Bonnaroo for about 90 minutes on Saturday evening. Most sets were shifted back and performed in full by the affected artists, and some acts such as Macklemore and Ryan Lewis picked up exactly where they left off.

“Waiting is the hardest part,” Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder joked as he thanked the crowd for their patience during the weather delay between set opener “Go” and “Save You.” Considering they played”Corduroy” just after, Vedder missed an opportunity to [More]

INTERVIEW: Alex from Two Door Cinema Club

  • 3:50 pm Saturday, June 11th, 2016 by Joel

Two Door Cinema Club frontman Alex Trimble joined us a few hours prior to their Saturday afternoon Bonnaroo 2016 performance. They’re road testing a couple new songs which they’ll play tonight, both of which are likely to be released online as singles over the next couple of weeks, with a long-awaited third full-length record in the can and waiting for release hopefully be the end of the year.

This is also the first time I held up a phone in order to stream the talk on Facebook Live as the interview was happening. Staying true to my tendency to make things [More]

INTERVIEW: Lauren Mayberry of CHVRCHES

  • 2:02 pm Saturday, June 11th, 2016 by Joel

A few hours prior to CHVRCHES incredible set on Bonnaroo’s massive What Stage, CHVRCHES frontwoman Lauren Mayberry swung by the Radio Roo backstage compound for a quick chat. I interviewed Lauren almost exactly two years prior, when CHVRCHES played The Other Tent also on a Friday. We converse about the growth of the band over those two years, Lauren’s outspoken internet persona in dealing with trolls and misogyny, and the re-worked Every Open Eye track “Bury It” that now features Hayley Williams from Paramore on guest vocals. The song just premiered on Thursday, and with Bonnaroo happening in Tennessee (Paramore’s home state), [More]

Dance-rock titans LCD Soundsystem and Tame Impala reign at Bonnaroo 2016 Day 2

  • 12:36 pm Saturday, June 11th, 2016 by Joel

Fridays are when Bonnaroo really gets going. What and Which Stage each host performers for the first time, and the names of those performers get bigger and bigger. None, perhaps, so big among the marquee Bonnaroo 2016 artists as the recently reunited LCD Soundsystem. I couldn’t pretend to be a fan before their performance. I would group them with other bands whose appeal I may not quite understand despite them earning legions of passionate followers. I’ve spent a little time investigating them over the years without hearing anything that drew me in. Well, I consider last night an education.

BØRNS, Bully, Polyenso captivate on Bonnaroo 2016 Day 1

  • 12:39 pm Friday, June 10th, 2016 by Joel

Day 1 at Bonnaroo is, in concept, pretty chill. Slackers like myself who did not arrive on Wednesday are still trickling in, setting up camp, and getting situated. Centeroo – the main festival area on The Farm – is almost completely up and running, though the two biggest stages will not host performers until Day 2 when all things Bonnaroo fire on all cylinders. This is not to say that Centeroo lacks people on its first day, because the massive throng of Bonnaroovians will crown a de facto headliner. And just shy of midnight Thursday, that artist was BØRNS.

The most exciting, excruciating part of Bonnaroo

  • 9:05 pm Tuesday, June 7th, 2016 by Joel

There’s something exciting at looking at the lineup of a massive destination music festival such as Bonnaroo and thinking, “Look at all these acts I’ll get to see!”

That anticipation can sometimes turn daunting when the schedule comes out and you begin to wonder, “How am I gonna see everything I want to see!?”

Most music festivals have a “custom schedule” feature on their website now. It’s either helpful or hurtful, depending on how many conflicts you have. My lone trip to The Farm back in 2014 featured, if I remember correctly, Vampire Weekend, Chvrches, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Phoenix all performing [More]
